Southland Casino Hotel features a 20-floor, 312 room hotel, five restaurants: The Ignite Steakhouse, The Kitchens buffet, The Fry House, The Grind Coffee Bar, and Seasons Café, along with four different bars. The rooms are nothing special, unless you book one of the 12 penthouse suites. They come with wrap around views, remote controlled lighting and curtains, and a relaxing sitting area. The Casino: The gambling floor covers the area of over two and a half American football fields. The main gambling area is non-smoking with a separate smoking section. It is so refreshing to be able to walk through a casino and subsequent hotel lobby that isn’t full of cigarette smoke. The casino and main middle bar are open 24-hours, seven days a week. The only downside is that game-side drinks are not free like many other casinos around the world, and sometimes it can take a while to get a drink because of the casino’s popularity, especially on weekends. The casino also has live music Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. It underwent a $320 million expansion in 2022 and hopes to have another expansion to its gaming floor in the next few years to include a stage and second on-floor bar. Live Oak Bourbon Bar: One of Southland’s bars is a craft cocktail bourbon bar featuring hundreds of bourbons from around the world. They also have more “upscale” appetizers and food options without needing a table or reservation like Ignite Steakhouse. On Tuesdays they offer flight special which include different bourbon, wine, beer, or whiskey samples along with appetizer flights of seafood, charcuterie, fruits, or vegetables. Ignite Steakhouse
The crab cakes were the hit of the appetizers with the lamb lollis being a close second. The 40 oz. bone-in tomahawk steak was of course the most talked about and photographed item we ordered on its own specialty made plate, but it was also the most delicious piece of meat. It was perfectly salted and served with an assortment of flavored butters that we didn’t even need. Then for dessert the interesting combination of a warm chocolate brownie with locally made key lime ice cream was a hit. Though many of us could barely think about desert after how full we were, we all enjoyed as much as we could and were glad we did, it was delicious. The meal was expensive, but the ambiance, waitstaff, and food were all up to par for the fares Southland charged. It is worth a meal, even if you aren’t staying at the hotel or planning to gamble. I would gamble its one of the better steakhouses on this side of Memphis. The Kitchens buffet
Besides their regular food stations, every night has a theme. Monday is International, Tuesday is Regional Barbeque, Wednesday is Steak, Thursday is Cajun, and the weekends are All-You-Can-Eat Crab Legs. Depending on the day and time you are eating, the buffet meals range from $22.99 up to $54.99. While casinos and gambling might not be for everyone, Southland really tries to cater to a diverse crowd who might be there for the drinks, to watch a big game, or have a great meal. As long as you are over the age of 21, Southland can be an unexpected place to visit and stay just right outside of Memphis.
