How to Avoid an Awkward Uber Ride

No matter where we go, John and I end up using Uber to avoid the burden of driving. A friendly chit chat always seems to make our ride more enjoyable no matter the distance. We've developed a few simple questions to ask any driver if the conversation stalls. 

How long have you been driving for Uber?

• This question is always a great starter question, because it requires the driver talk about themselves. If you get a talkative Uber driver, you may not have to ask another question before the ride is over. Even if your driver isn't uber talkative, this question always leads to  opportunities to continue the conversation. 

Why did you start driving for Uber?

• If this question hasn't already been answered, it provides the driver more of an opportunity to talk about their personal life. John and I have noticed a pattern. A lot of Uber drivers are saving up for major life events like a wedding or the birth of a child. Most drivers seem quite happy to talk about their excitement for such important events. 

Do you like driving for Uber?

• We have never had anyone say "no" to this question, and we've gathered that there aren't many things to dislike about the job. You may hear a "no" before we do, but either answer presents easy and obvious follow up questions.

Did you grow up around here? 

• ​If you aren't getting much from the first few questions switch it up and get them talking about themselves again. This is always a great question when you are in a different city so that you can see why they moved there and get some locals opinions on restaurants and places to go. 

Have you ever picked up any crazy passengers/What's the craziest thing that's happened while you were driving for Uber?

• This is the hands down the best question you can ask a driver. It doesn't require the driver to talk about themselves, and you will hear some crazy stories. We have had drivers tell us stories about bachelorette parties, fights between passengers, and couples that were too handsy in the backseat. John and I have only had one driver that hadn't had something extraordinary happen to him, but he had only been driving for a week. 

John and I have never felt unsafe or had a bad experience with Uber, but you can use simple questions like these to help the drive go by a little faster if you find yourself in an uncomfortable situation. You never know what you might learn about someone or the city you're visiting!
