Exploring Canon Blanco Looking For Petroglyphs in Utuado, Puerto Rico

Taylor and I’s second day in the Utuado, Puerto Rico area began with a trip to Cañon Blanco. The water-carved canyon is tucked into the Utuado jungle and boasts to be the petroglyph capital of Puerto Rico.

Finding the canyon wasn’t difficult, there was pretty good signage, but there isn’t much parking along the road. Luckily, we snagged a spot and quickly hit the trail. ​

The trail was just a quick little walk through some bushes that opened up to a pebbly beach on a shallow, calm stretch of the Rio Caonillas.

Taylor and I noticed the canyon rising out of the beach, and we immediately headed toward it. We climbed up the stark, white canyon finding a beautiful view of the surrounding mountainous jungle. There were people floating below, so we asked where the carvings were - no one knew.

​We immediately kept climbing up the magnificent bright white stones, looking, trying to imagine where the petroglyphs would be.

​Eventually, we crossed the river at a shallow spot but couldn’t find a path on the canyon or in the jungle’s edge. Deciding to turn our expedition back toward the car, we tried to find new paths atop the canyon walls.  ​

We kept exploring, hopping from rock to rock, and keeping our eyes out for carvings in the stone.

​Taylor and I spent a couple of hours blissfully enjoying the area. We never found the petroglyphs, but we did find a nice swim and most importantly, we found one of the most beautiful canyons we’ve ever visited.
